“It is finished!” Jesus cried from the cross, ushering all who would believe into a reconciled relationship with God. Salvation was accomplished and peace proclaimed for those who were formerly enemies.
Yet war rages on, not only across the globe but in our own homes—a disgruntled sibling ousted from the bathroom on a school morning, a disappointed spouse who wanted a peaceful date night and instead finds battle lines drawn over daily stressors. How can we experience the peace of God in a world still in need of full redemption?
We can rest in the presence of the God who loves us deeply and knows us completely. We can glean from his presence the courage to face the battles of our day, knowing there is a deep place of peace from which we operate. We can experience peace as we follow what the psalmist commands, “Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10).
Because Christ finished the work of salvation on the cross, all that’s necessary for deep
and eternal peace with God is completed. We cannot add to it nor disrupt it. As we rest in Christ, we are free to experience the peace that he accomplished.
